TURKEY identity
20 November 2014
Hello my friend the MLE,
As I'm going to Turkey this weekend, thought why not write a post about this identity for Turkey I found online a few weeks ago...
The logo is a beautiful thing: behold how the patterns are integrated into the wordmark. This is not easily done and it looks great. However, "Under Consideration," where I got my info from, has a good point when they say that when this logo is printed small, say business-card size, a lot of the detail is going to get muddy and lost - which is a big problem. As they say, "a shorthand version for using as a seal of approval" would be a wise option.
Re the applications, of course the logo all big and 3D on the wall looks great. But the bag and the posters are cold, generic and boring and look more like another country rather than Turkey in my opinion. The identity for Bologna, which is similar, is more successful and rich (see the folders above). And I wonder what's up with the drab colour palette?
Talk when I'm back!

A BETTER man
11 November 2014
Hi MLE,
I'm so proud and excited to tell you about Attiya's documentary. I designed the logo, you can see above. The film is called, "A Better Man," and it follows her journey as a survivor, over twenty years and offers a new hope in the struggle to end violence against women. This is very close to me personally, not only because Attiya is one of my best friends, but also because we grew up together, and I was there the night she met her would-be boyfriend and abuser. We were only 16-year-olds at a Depeche Mode concert.
What happened was very confusing to me, and I have always wished I did more, I always wished I had understood what domestic violence was. I hope kids today who are even younger than 16 years old are taught what it is. I am happy to see that more people are talking about violence against women today. This film will help to keep the conversation going AND get people to do something about it, as it will shed a light on efforts to help abusive men change.
MLE and whoever else is taking the time to read this, please contribute to the campaign, share the link with your friends and family, and together we can help make our communities a safer place to live... for everyone.

NOW is the only thing's that real
10 October 2014
Happy Friday MLE!
Sometimes on a Friday, if I have time, I'll waste it following random links on the internet for longer than I probably should. I have to admit, I still like checking in on the Photoshop Disasters site. Maybe this is because I just can't seem to get bored of how the media warps reality. I love to scrutinize news stories and how they are being spun, trying to catch out the actual motives driving them. I love to imagine myself in the meeting room getting briefed for an ad campaign, so I can see what the client is hoping to achieve. I love to analyse which techniques a film is using to pull at my emotions. Yes, this makes me a very annoying person. And I annoy myself because I often can't seem to just listen to CNN or enjoy a Hollywood film for what it is.
Anyway, check out good old Nicki Minaj above (I really like her music btw). The first thing you may notice is how the Nicki brand has undergone a brand refresh so that the product has more muscles and more expensive clothes and so on... All standard procedure because the more attractive the product, the more it will sell, blah blah blah, boring. But what is unusual is to catch a massive brand's mistake in it's smoke and mirrors work. And it is a reminder that even Getty Images' photos are all glossed over (where this photo was found), particularly when they feature a precious big brand. I just can't get bored of this! Why??
Update: some people have asked what is wrong with the photo. If you look at where her leg meets her body (weird) then compare it to where the leg meets the body of the woman behind her (normal) then you can see it.

WITH(IN) on iTunes
24 September 2014
Hello Emelie,
Hope you're having a good afternoon my friend. Just a quick note for you to say the art film WITH(IN) is now available on iTunes. MOTHandRUST was briefed by our client Portland Green Cultural Projects to design the covers for two separate but related films, IN AROUND AND CORNERED and WITHIN AGAINST AND UPON. These two films comprise the WITH(IN) compilation, hence its cover design clearly depicting both covers. All three film covers were designed with their placement on iTunes taken into consideration, so that they are bold and impactful even at small screen sizes.
You can watch them here, they're really good.
We also helped Portland prep one of the films for a screening in Times Square (Erika Janunger's, Weightless, 2012). You can see an image above, it looks great, more art should be featured in Times Square, I reckon.
Speak soon!

LONDON designjunction
18 September 2014
Hey hey the MLE,
Reporting back from designjunction last night, a London event showcasing furniture, lighting and product design. It was quite fun, as it's a bit trade show, but also there are pop-up shops selling things, large installations, seminars, screening, and places to eat and drink etc. The venue itself was perfect, a derelict 1960s Sorting Office in central London.
In the first photo shows Daniel sitting in his favourite piece, a very comfortable chair, but I lost the card I collected, so don't know the designer. Second is the Nick Fraser coat rack. Third is the Hybrid No2 chair by Merve Kahraman (when I showed my interior architect friends in the pub after they did not approve however). What they did approve of is the fourth product, the classic Anglepoise 1227 brass wall mounted lamp, so that is good. And finally, both Daniel and I quite liked these Richard Brendon china sets. Well I thought they were entire dinner sets judging by the price, but they are actually unique individual cups and saucers. But beautiful.
