  • PLANET EARTH in concert

    MLE.

Word. A friend took me to see the BBC's Planet Earth at the Southbank Centre the other day. It was accompanied by a live orchestra, so the sound was amazing, better than I thought actually.  Evidently Planet Earth is a 2006 television series produced by the BBC Natural History unit. As I don't watch television ever, I naturally had never heard of it before. It took 5 years to make and is the most expensive documentary series ever commissioned by the BBC.

I was blown away by the "hunter and hunted" part.  It is basically just a series of alligators and sharks attacking their prey, but shown in super super slow motion - which makes it absolutely majestic.

You can see the famous shark clip here.  Unfortunately, the quality is very poor, I wish I had more time to hunt down something better.

    Hey MLE!

Ok, check out these amazing tights.  A brilliant idea. So many people are all about silk screening t-shirts.  These ladies have brought silk screening to tights.  Ta da!  I know a friend who has a pair and they look amazing actually being worn.  Their site features a series of really beautifully curated images of patterns, well work a gander. Oh and I love their logo too.

Happy Sunday Suzan! Check out this installation – an artwork titled "Bouquet finale" by Michel Blazy. He's put giant foam-producing machines inside a 13th century monastery in Paris, which pump out huge bubbly clouds. It's like Ibiza foam party-meets-classical architecture, a clash of unexpected pairs: hard stone and soft foam, indoor "dry" space and outdoor wet substance.... with a dreamy, quite beautiful result. Let's go to Paris!

  • DAZZLE camouflage

    sharefacebooktwitter
    7 September 2012

    Hey the MLE!

When I was visiting Glasgow this summer I checked out the brand new "Riverside Museum: Scotland's Museum of Transport and Travel."  It was a great museum, totally recommend.  While I was there, I discovered some models of ships with something wonderful called "dazzle camouflage" (see my photo of the model on top).

Did a bit of research and of course there are many designers and various hipsters that are all over this already.  You can see dazzle camo inspired textiles, notebook covers, cars, scooters etc etc. but regardless...

For a bit of background, this was developed primarily in the First World war for "confusion rather than concealment."  Sculptors, artists, and set designers designed this camouflage, testing first on small wooden models viewed through a periscope in a studio.

Sure it's effectiveness was constantly in question, blah blah blah.  But the ships looked super cool and the crew loved it, which helped to boost morale.

Picasso, the modest man that he was, tried to take credit for dazzle camouflage, which seemed to him a quintessentially Cubist technique.

    Et voila,
